Controlling Populations of Neurons

چکیده

It has been hypothesized that tremors associated with Parkinson's disease result from pathologically synchronized neural activity in the motor control region of the brain, and that deep brain stimulation (DBS) relieves the tremors by desynchronizing these neurons. With the goal of improving such treatment of Parkinson's disease, we have been using optimal control theory to develop DBS stimuli which achieve desynchronization of neural populations using less power than present implementations. This includes the development of a procedure for finding an energy-optimal stimulus which gives a positive Lyapunov exponent, and hence desynchronization, for a neural population. This uses less energy than recently proposed methods, and suggests a powerful alternative to pulsatile stimuli for DBS.

Activation of inwardly-rectifying k+ channels in hypothalamic POMC neurons: role in integrating synaptic and metabolic input

Hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are critical for controlling homeostatic functions in mammals. We used a transgenic mouse model in which the POMC neurons were labeled with enhanced-green fluorescent protein (EGFP) to perform visualized, whole-cell patch recordings from pre-pubertal female hypothalamic slices. The mouse POMC-EGFP neurons expressed the same endogenous conductance ...

Molecular characterization of Thy1 expressing fear-inhibiting neurons within the basolateral amygdala

Molecular characterization of neuron populations, particularly those controlling threat responses, is essential for understanding the cellular basis of behaviour and identifying pharmacological agents acting selectively on fear-controlling circuitry. Here we demonstrate a comprehensive workflow for identification of pharmacologically tractable markers of behaviourally characterized cell populat...

Improving the Izhikevich Model Based on Rat Basolateral Amygdala and Hippocampus Neurons, and Recognizing Their Possible Firing Patterns

Introduction: Identifying the potential firing patterns following different brain regions under normal and abnormal conditions increases our understanding of events at the level of neural interactions in the brain. Furthermore, it is important to be capable of modeling the potential neural activities to build precise artificial neural networks. The Izhikevich model is one of the simplest biolog...

Simultaneous recording of macaque premotor and primary motor cortex neuronal populations reveals different functional contributions to visuomotor grasp.

To understand the relative contributions of primary motor cortex (M1) and area F5 of the ventral premotor cortex (PMv) to visually guided grasp, we made simultaneous multiple electrode recordings from the hand representations of these two areas in two adult macaque monkeys. The monkeys were trained to fixate, reach out and grasp one of six objects presented in a pseudorandom order. In M1 326 ta...

Fezl Is Required for the Birth and Specification of Corticospinal Motor Neurons

The molecular mechanisms controlling the differentiation of neural progenitors into distinct subtypes of neurons during neocortical development are unknown. Here, we report that Fezl is required for the specification of corticospinal motor neurons and other subcerebral projection neurons, which are absent from Fezl null mutant neocortex. There is neither an increase in cell death in Fezl(-/-) c...
